July 1st, 2007Website Review: JustChromatography.com
Today I’m reviewing a website about Chromatography, which I have no idea what Chromatography is. I am not very good from Chemistry or any other sciences for that matter, so, for the purposes of this review, I am going to avoid talking about the content, because it is way over my head. I’m also just going to jump into the criticism of this website straight into the review and say what sort of changes I would do to this website.
For starters, I’m going to mention something that a non-webmaster friend told me when I showed him the website. He doesn’t know anything about SEO or owning a website, but these are the things he noticed as merely an internet user. These are direct quotes: “too much scrolling, bigger header, lot of blank space to the right?, you also ahve to scroll all the way down to see recent entries, comments, and most commented” (Yes, I know there are typo’s there). From the stuff my friend pointed out, I’d like to talk about the header. I’ve never really had many people use my search bar (although today someone searched the term “porn” on my blog today…), and JustChromatography.com has a search bar as big as the rest of the websites navigation. I would really consider making your nav bar a little bigger if you wanted to get more clicks there.
I personally think that JustChromatography.com could use a new about page. If you take a close look, their current page only has a few sentences about the author, then a little text telling you what his email is. I would recommend installing a nice Wordpress contact plugin, and really expanding his about page (maybe include a few pictures to connect more with his readers?). The main thing I think Chemist, aka Sandesh needs on his blog is some sort of RSS button, using the standard RSS icon. He is currently limiting his subscribers to only subscribe via Google and Yahoo, and he is completely missing out on all the other subscribers. Oh, and what’s WiTricity?
There’s actually a few other things he should consider looking at, such as removing his footer, which is probably generating no click-thru’s to other pages and stuff like that, but I think I’ve mentioned enough for one day. Still, you’ve really got to commend that guy for blogging about such an intricate niche. Seeing blogs like this one only confirms my decision to have a business major in college…

Not to mention he didn’t give credit to the his theme creator (it’s a saturated them anyway)
I seriously butchered that comment. Oh well, you know what I mean.
Chromatography is just a term used to describe numerous different techniques for separating mixtures. It’s really quite interesting, but it can get tedious…Ah, good times in my chemistry lab.
Lol, you WOULD know the answer o this Mr. Zero to Med
Well DUH! I have to know this stuff if I am going to become a doctor.
Well honestly I agree with the whole layout thing. It got me thinking about http://msbands.com . My layout is pretty clashy and doesn’t fit. Any opinions on what I should do for a theme?
There does appear to be some wasted space I agree, but I do like the overall design. The issue on scrolling is likely because lots of blog posts are displayed on the home page?
Very nice review. Yes I like the design. alot of wasted space ur right
Andy has a point though, a big reason why there is so much scrolling is because of the length of the blog posts. Perhaps a new criticism would be to lengthen posts or have a button saying “click here to read the rest”
I’m glad you all agreed with my review

Was this paid review or not? It’s just interesting for me if you write paid reviews.
